Grandparenthood: Watching Love Begin Again
On August 4th, our family grew a little sweeter, a little fuller, and a whole lot more in love as we welcomed our newest little granddaughter into the world. Her arrival has brought so much joy, and as I hold her in my arms, I am reminded once again of what an incredible blessing it is to be a grandparent.
She joins two other precious grandchildren who have already filled our lives with laughter, wonder, and unforgettable memories. Each grandchild has brought their own unique light into our family, and with every new little one, our hearts somehow expand to make room for even more love.
There is something incredibly special about becoming a parent. The first time you hold your child, you discover a love you didn't know was possible. Parenthood is wonderful, exhausting, humbling, messy, beautiful, and completely life-changing. You spend years guiding, protecting, teaching, worrying, celebrating, and learning alongside these little people who somehow grow up far too quickly.
And then, one day, you become a grandparent.
I have discovered that being a grandparent is a different kind of bliss.
It isn't that the love is greater. I don't love my grandchildren more than I loved my children. It is something different—a revisiting of a love that feels deeper, softer, and more patient.
Perhaps part of it is that you have already walked the road of parenthood. You know how quickly those newborn days disappear. You understand that the sleepless nights eventually become stories you tell, that the tiny fingers become hands you hold for entirely different reasons, and that the years you thought would last forever somehow pass in the blink of an eye.
As a parent, there is responsibility. So much responsibility. You are the one making the decisions, worrying about whether you're doing things right, trying to keep everyone fed, clothed, safe, healthy, and reasonably sane. There is a pressure that comes with raising a child that you don't necessarily feel in quite the same way as a grandparent.
As a grandparent, you have the beautiful opportunity to simply be present.
You get to watch your own child become a parent. And there is something profoundly moving about that.
You see the little person you once carried, rocked, comforted, and guided holding their own baby. You see pieces of yourself reflected in them, but you also see the person they have become entirely on their own. And suddenly, you get to know your child again in a whole new way.
Maybe that is one of the greatest gifts of being a grandparent.
You get to be part of your child again—but in a much deeper way.
You get to witness their tenderness, their strength, their uncertainty, and their joy. You get to watch them discover the same overwhelming love that you once discovered when you held them for the first time.
And now, with three beautiful grandchildren, I find myself reflecting on how much love one heart can hold. Each child is different. Each relationship is unique. Yet every one of them has brought more laughter, more perspective, and more gratitude into our lives.
As I hold our newest little girl, I find myself remembering it all.
The tiny newborn sounds. The little stretches. The way a baby's hand wraps around your finger. The overwhelming feeling that this tiny person has somehow always belonged in your heart.
Being a grandparent doesn't mean the responsibility disappears. We still worry. We still care deeply. We still want to protect them from every hard thing life might bring.
But there is a different perspective now.
There is more patience.
More appreciation.
More willingness to simply sit quietly and soak in the ordinary moments, because we know just how quickly they pass.
Maybe that's what makes grandparent love feel so blissful. You aren't trying to rush through the difficult parts to get to the next milestone. You understand that these moments—the snuggles, the laughter, the tiny hands, and the simple everyday joys—are the milestones.
So, welcome to the family, sweet girl. You arrived on August 4th and joined two other beautiful grandchildren who have each changed our world in their own special way.
You are loved beyond measure, and we are so incredibly grateful for the privilege of watching all three of you grow.
Parenthood is wonderful.
But grandparenthood?
Grandparenthood is watching love begin again—with a fuller heart, a gentler spirit, and the wisdom to cherish every precious moment.
